Are you Happy as Larry?

Today, happy as Larry naturally rolled off my tongue when a student asked me, “How are you?”
Of course, the student immediately asked: “Who is Larry?”

I've heard and often used this idiom since childhood but frankly, I had no idea who Larry was or his story. So, like any curious minded person, I went looking for Larry and found this article:

Personally, I’m as happy as Larry without Larry's "big win" when I teach students idioms and take them to the next level in English; developing their career. At the same time, I also discover fascinating facts about the origins of idioms. In a way, I also become a student!

However, the idiom made me reflect on this:
